Doplgenger in e-flux online program

February 20th 2026

The artistic duo Doplgenger (Isidora Ilić and Boško Prostran) has a selection of their works streamed as part of e-flux’s online program, General Relativity, Take Two, which considers the aesthetics and politics of artistic duos. How do two artists act in concert as one? What sort of subjects and materials lend themselves to this form of compound approach?

Doplgenger utilizes found footage to investigate and decipher the media codes on which societies are contingent and which can sometimes contribute to their collapse. Three of their works from the Fragments Untitled series are currently being streamed as part of e-flux’s program from 18 February to 3 March. The program has been curated by our artistic director, Greg de Cuir Jr.

Works by Doplgenger are available through our distribution service and can be viewed in our catalogue. For more information on distribution and rental, please forward your inquiries to → [email protected]

Igor Simić has a rooftop installation at SMILERS in Summer 2026

January 27th 2026

SMILERS – a young New York City art space in East Village – has announced the opening of its newest exhibition, SMALL WORLD!, in summer 2026. The centerpiece will be a rooftop installation, consisting of a miniature golf course, which will be set up and available for visitors to play.

The creator of this installation – Igor Simić – has fashioned it to convey a vision of a post-capitalist future (or apocalypse!). Neon-colored sculptures are laid out as obstacles across a golf course designed by Simić. He approached SMILERS with this idea, which meshes together the digital and actual in a cute, low poly style that astutely reveals the adverse effects that global connectivity and rapid, internet-fed consumerism has on the human soul. Advanced tee time reservations can be made at the link above.

Stay tuned for more exciting news surrounding Igor Simić in 2026. A roster of video works by the artist which are available for distribution by Kinopravda Institute can be viewed on our Distribution page. For more information about rentals, please send your inquiries to → [email protected]

Video Data Bank faces serious challenges

November 29th 2025

The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) announced on November 12 the dismissal of multiple staff members from Video Data Bank, an organization which has been instrumental in the conservation, distribution, curation and programming of video art. This announcement came on the eve of its 50th anniversary, making it a particularly hard blow to the moving image art community. According to Tom Colley, the former director of the institution, he and two other staff members – Elise Schierbeek and Nicky Ni – were abruptly dismissed from VDB.

In a private letter written in response to a query by a member of the faculty, Martin Berger, the provost and senior vice president of academic affairs at SAIC, stated that “…like many colleges, SAIC is facing financial pressures due to changes in federal policy… We have taken several actions to reduce spending, including the elimination of a limited number of staff.”

VDB was founded at SAIC in 1976 and has, over the course of the intervening decades, amassed a large collection of over 6,000 titles by around 600 artists, many of them being definitive works in the history of film and video art. The downsizing of VDB has elicited condemnation from the broader artistic community, cultural workers and institutions in the US.

Nika Autor contemplates the permanence of solidarity at M HKA

Published: Oct. 24th 2025

The M HKA (Museum of Contemporary Art Antwerp) is currently holding a group exhibition titled There Is Nothing Solid About Solidarity, lasting from Sept. 26th to Nov. 23rd 2025. In a world increasingly beset by wars, immigration crises, and the proliferation of threats to democracy, M HKA has assembled works by a group of artists which portray how people are finding support, resisting current negative trends and building new networks. By establishing a connection between diverse contexts and historical backgrounds, solidarity is revealed as a reality that is not fixed, but constantly being reinvented.

Among the group of artists participating in the exhibition at M HKA is Nika Autor, a Slovenian visual artist and filmmaker whose artistic practice reflects the current social reality and lends visibility and voice to the invisible/inaudible. By examining asylum and migration policies, workers’ rights and the politics of memory, Nika casts a light on the injustices affecting the contemporary world through the lens of art.

Nika Autor recently joined Kinopravda Institute’s distribution program. You can view a selection of her works which are available for renting in our distribution catalogue. For more information on rentals, please inquire at the following address → [email protected]

Armando Lulaj pushes limits at Galleria de’ Foscherari

Published: Oct. 13th 2025

Galleria de’ Foscherari, a contemporary art gallery from Bologna, has announced the opening of the exhibition Pushing the Limits, a collaboration between the institution and the DebatikCenter of Contemporary Art. Scheduled to open on Oct. 17th, this collaborative project represents an important encounter between the two entities. A selection of historic works by the DebatikCenter spanning a period of two decades has been curated by Fabiola Naldi for the occasion.

The project was conceived by Armando Lulaj, who established DebatikCenter together with his colleagues in Bologna in 2003 as a means of cultural and political resistance against the global neoliberal narrative. Large installations and archival materials by Lulaj are displayed alongside the works of Pleurad Xhafa and the collectives Underground Movement, La Société Spectrale, and Manifesto Collective.

Conceptually framed as an archive of decline, the artists take an analytical approach to geopolitical and cultural issues that have been unfolding in the Middle East, the United States and Italy filtered through the historical and political lens of Albania. A selection of Lulaj’s video works are available for renting through our distribution catalogue. For more information, please address your inquiries to → [email protected]

Igor Simić announces new video work at Seriesly in Berlin

Published: Sept. 23rd 2025

Seriesly Berlin – an annual festival dedicated to serial storytelling – ran its second edition from September 15 to 18 at Fotografiska Berlin. The event provides a platform for artists to engage in discussions about serial narrative formats, present pitches for new projects, and contemplate the future of storytelling in an era where the media sphere is oversaturated with content.

Among the keynote speakers attending the event, Igor Simić – a Serbian-American artist and filmmaker – held a thought-provoking keynote, titled Are We Content With “Content”? in which he assesses our place in an attention economy channeled by algorithmic practices.

Simić announced at the conference that he is making a new animated hybrid that combines the classic Disney animation Steamboat Willie and the 1928 feature film The Passion of Joan of Arc by Carl Theodor Dreyer. In this upcoming animated film, Simić will have Joan of Arc appear in a vision to Mickey Mouse. Vlada Petrić in the Image World at Anthology Film Archives

June 30th 2025

Anthology Film Archives, a center for the preservation, study and exhibition of film art in New York, has announced the six-part series Interceptions: Yugoslavia in the Image World, which will endeavor to interrogate the cinematic legacy of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia through the lens of “the image world”. Presented from July 18 to July 21, the series will cover a broad gamut of genres and styles that flourished in Yugoslavia and its successor states. The program revisits Harvard Film Archive’s program Yugoslav Junction, which was held in November 2024.

The work of Vlada Petrić has been included in the third program of this series, “The Animated Unconscious,” with Light Play: A Tribute to Moholy-Nagy. Based on László Moholy-Nagy’s 1930 kinetic piece Light Modulator, Petrić applied Dziga Vertov’s novel theories of the interval and montage to reinterpret the work, creating a psychedelic and unparalleled jewel of cine-pyrotechnics that centers light and motion as the main carriers of the film’s meaning.

This rarely-screened gem of experimental film, completed in 1988, is available for preview as a digital file through the Kinopravda Institute distribution program. The 16mm print is held at Harvard Film Archive. For more information on works by Vlada Petrić and for inquiries about rentals, please contact us at → [email protected]

Alternative Film/Video presents: Alpe-Adria Underground

November 26 2024

As one of the programs being presented at the 30th Film d’Auteur Festival in Belgrade, the Alternative Film/Video team will be screening the long-awaited documentary film about the achievements in experimental cinema accomplished in Slovenia during the era of Communist Yugoslavia (1945-1991).

This rich cinematic heritage, which has for decades been neglected on both the domestic and international scenes, serves as the centerpiece of this documentary exploration, highlighting the significance of Slovenia’s contributions to the experimental genre. During the decade spanning from 2013 to 2023, the Slovenian Film Archive was involved in the preservation and digitalization of the over 179 short films produced during this period, most of them outside of the purview of the state’s control.

Thanks to the efforts of the Slovenian Film Archive in the preservation of these experimental shorts, the significance of their innovation within the frame of the Slovenian film heritage is finally receiving its due recognition. Visitors to the screening will have the opportunity to hear the experience of the various pioneers whose works shaped this cinematic landscape. The screening will be followed by a special Q&A session with directors Matevž Jerman and Jurij Meden.

The screening of Alpe-Adria Underground is scheduled for November 28th 2024 at 7 p.m. at the building of the Yugoslav Film Archive located in Uzun Mirkova Street No. 1. Due to the limited number of seats available, we advise visitors to come earlier to the event. For more info, check here.

A Rare Cinematic Masterpiece by Vlada Petrić //„Light-Play: A Tribute to Moholy-Nagy“ // arrives at the Harvard Film Archive this November

October 29 2024

We are thrilled to announce an upcoming screening of Light-Play: A Tribute to Moholy-Nagy, an exceptional, one of a kind experimental video essay by the esteemed film theorist and director Vlada Petrić at Harvard Film Archive, on November 22nd at 7 p.m.

This special screening is part of the Archive’s series The Yugoslav Junction: Film and Internationalism in the SFRY, 1957–1988, which explores the vibrant intersection of Yugoslav cinema.

“Light Play: A Tribute to Moholy-Nagy” represents a video essay through which Vlada Petrić pays homage to the legendary avant-garde artist László Moholy-Nagy, a Bauhaus pioneer known for his exploration of light, motion, and kinetic sculpture. Drawing inspiration from Moholy-Nagy’s 1930 kinetic piece Light Modulator, featured in the experimental film Ein Lichtspiel: Schwarz, Weiss, Grau, Petrić reinterprets every frame of the original film, incorporating Dziga Vertov’s theories of interval and montage. Through this approach, he carefully deconstructs then reconstructs the sequences creating a fresh narrative rhythm and adding experimental depth.

Petrić’s film explores the profound question: What happens when light and motion become the storytellers? The result is a complex dialogue between 20th-century experimental art and contemporary visual theory, conveyed solely through visual language. By using the simplicity of light, motion, and geometric abstraction, he creates a rhythm that is both cohesive and abstract, engaging the viewer in a unique narrative form.

After being completed in 1988, Light Play stands as a rarely seen gem in the world of experimental cinema. Thanks to the Kinopravda Institute, this masterpiece will be showcased in an exclusive screening and is now available for rental as a digital file—bringing broader access to a work that has long remained hidden from view. More information about this screening at Harvard Film Archive can be found →  here

It Rains Differently – Reforesting the Pešter Plateau

August 13 2024

As our societies become more dependent on and integrated with technology, it is important to remember the importance that forests have for the future. This is what Dušica Dražić, artist and independent curator, had in mind when she decided to initiate a twofold project: the reforestation of the karst region of the Pešter Plateau and the shooting of a docu-film which would record this endeavor for posterity.

In the period between 1973 and 1988, a series of Youth Work Actions held during the summer gathered together thousands of youth from all over Yugoslavia to volunteer in the reforestation of the region. The artist’s father, Milutin Dražić, a forest engineer, led the project and oversaw its realization. Through this undertaking, the author intends to replicate her father’s achievement, but also to uncover the deeper significance of the forest as an entity that acquires the nature of a transnational, political, social and cultural collective. This initiative lasts from August 18 to August 25. Follow the volunteers and Dušica on their adventure here -> https://www.dusicadrazic.com/it-rains-differently/

Doplgenger exhibits on two continents

31 July 2024

The artist duo Doplgenger are participating in two exhibitions that are continents apart yet tied together thematically by their desire to address the influence that political and economic forces have on the well-being of the social body. In the exhibition at the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts in Belgrade, which is dedicated to the life and works of the Serbian artist Djordje Andrejević-Kun, Doplgenger has pieced together archival footage that documents his life and artistic career, conveying the audiovisual sensations that were formative in creating Kun’s aesthetic outlook. The exhibition is on view through September 8, 2024.

The other exhibition, titled “Power Plays”, revolves around the sports film genre, focusing more specifically on the forces which serve as the driving engine for the global sports media complex. The Carnegie Museum in Pittsburgh has assembled seven artists who each provide a glimpse into this fascinating world through their own unique approach. Doplgenger is showing Fragments Untitled #6, a short which dissects the politics and media perception of a football match that was to be played in Zagreb in 1990.

His work is oriented towards the border between economic power, fictional democracy and social disparity in a global context.

Lulaj co-founded the DebatikCenter of Contemporary Art in 2003 in Tirana, which is a space that offers the necessary tools to imagine alternative futures and strategies of resistance to the status quo. His works have been shown at the Prague Biennial (2003, 2007), the 6th Berlin Biennial (2010), the 52nd Venice Biennial (2007), the 63rd Berlin International Film Festival (2013), the National Theater in Tirana (2013), and he represented Albania at the 56th Venice Biennial (2015). Emily Dickinson: Three B’s screening at Beldocs film festival

8 May 2024

Beldocs International Documentary Film Festival in Belgrade will host the premiere screening of Vlada Petrić’s posthumous video essay, Emily Dickinson: Three B’s, on 24 May 2024. Petrić was fascinated by the life and poetic imagination of Emily Dickinson, especially with regards to her relationship towards religion. During the last decade of his life, he and his wife Dara Čalenić collaborated on this personal pilgrimage through Dickinson’s writings.

Petrić finished the final edit of this video essay just a few months before his death in November 2019. Kinopravda Institute has worked with particular dedication in the years following to add the final touches in post-production, completing this process in 2023. We are excited to present to the world this final work by the man whose personality and career has been an inspiration to us and whose studies in cinematography serve as a beacon for our team. Kinopravda Institute is distributing Emily Dickinson: Three B’s, along with earlier works of film and video by Vlada Petric. View the distribution catalog at the site link here.

Refractions: an intermedia performance by Vladislav Knežević

20/03/2024

Vladislav Knežević, artist and filmmaker, is holding an intermedia performance at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Zagreb. The performance is a reinterpretation of Stéphane Mallarmé’s cult poem “A Throw of the Dice will Never Abolish Chance”, his final major work, which he wrote in 1897.

The artist has engaged the text of this poem through his own cinematic lens, drawing on various associations that elude description. His performance is accompanied by the unique sonic landscapes of Alen and Nenad Sinkauz, with the first-time cooperation of French vocalist, Isabelle Duthoit. The performance will be staged in the Gorgona Hall of the Museum of Contemporary Art Zagreb on March 28 2024 at 8:00 p.m. More information about the event can be accessed here → http://www.msu.hr/dogadanja/refrakcije-refractions-intermedijski-slucaj/1417.html
